![]() ![]() The second part of the book explores how eugenics operates today, as part of our language and culture, as part of current political and racial discussions, and as an eternal temptation to powerful people who wish to improve society through reproductive control. ![]() The first half of Control is the history of an idea, from its roots in key philosophical texts of the classical world all the way into their genocidal enactment in the twentieth century. Despite this horrific legacy, eugenics looms large today as the advances in genetics in the last thirty years-from the sequencing of the human genome to modern gene editing techniques-have brought the idea of population purification back into the mainstream.Įugenics has “a short history, but a long past,” Rutherford writes. ![]() How did an obscure academic idea pave the way to the Holocaust within just fifty years?Ĭontrol is a book about eugenics, what geneticist Adam Rutherford calls “a defining idea of the twentieth century.” Inspired by Darwin’s ideas about evolution, eugenics arose in Victorian England as a theory for improving the British population, and quickly spread to America, where it was embraced by presidents, funded by Gilded Age monopolists, and enshrined into racist American laws that became the ideological cornerstone of the Third Reich. ![]()

![]() Strangers in Their Own Land goes beyond the commonplace liberal idea that these are people who have been duped into voting against their own interests. As she gets to know people who strongly oppose many of the ideas she famously champions, Hochschild nevertheless finds common ground and quickly warms to the people she meets-among them a Tea Party activist whose town has been swallowed by a sinkhole caused by a drilling accident-people whose concerns are actually ones that all Americans share: the desire for community, the embrace of family, and hopes for their children. ![]() ![]() In Strangers in Their Own Land, the renowned sociologist Arlie Hochschild embarks on a thought-provoking journey from her liberal hometown of Berkeley, California, deep into Louisiana bayou country-a stronghold of the conservative right. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is a very abbreviated summary of Mary’s life. They didn’t all like her, but they certainly paid attention. However, I also think that this book manages an uplifting tone by demonstrating that Mary’s life mattered, not just to her, and not just to future generations, but to all of the people who came in contact with her. Perhaps the blows were cushioned by the fact that as a Wollstonecraft fan I knew most of what lay ahead. Rather, I found myself exhilarated by all Mary did with her life, and more fond than ever of this stubborn, passionate, brilliant, frustrating woman. Further TW’S include a difficult childbirth, depression, sexism, attempted suicide, marital rape, and death of an infant.Īnd yet I did not find the book to be depressing. TW: Death from childbirth, abuse of children, implied martial rape, murder of a dog. ![]() ![]() ![]() But connections are lack in real world, because people play different games in different aspects of life, see Book review: Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius. I mean, I’m still interested in and constantly amazed by all kinds of connections, even tiny and trivial ones, see δ. Math is beautiful and touching even, but physics is not, physics is messy and realistic. But anyway, the purpose of popularization is always get the reader to learn the real thing. ![]() Without the theorems and equations I learned, I would have a much more vague idea of the content in the book. I can quickly get what he is talking about because I’m learning Group Theory this semester. Unlike physics, it’s much harder to write math popularization. We wrote this stuff because we really wanted to figure out what we were supposed to be doing with our lives. This is where us now all too grown up 90s kids come in. Unable or unwilling to blurt this stuff out to our equally disgruntled and emotional peers (or the popular types we pit ourselves against in our heads everyday) we then find ourselves using poetry to get it out of our systems. ![]() The trouble is that at that age we also really don't want to talk about it with anyone we see as an authority figure and we tend to see ourselves as our own sort of mini fiefdoms, lost islands where only our truth is the real one. ![]() As teens we all struggle with self expression, identity, social conformity and the very loaded minefield of relationships.
